So… Made in Berlin.
A “pokketmixer” – I’m not sure what to think about it. I went to a party introducing the thing. I didn’t stay, but only because I didn’t have time, and it wasn’t exactly what I expected. I arrived at the place, and straight away saw some people setting up the dj booth. I said to myself “cool, there will be some music going on”…
…came closer and saw guys struggling to connect their equipment. I’m a sound engineer, maybe I’m too impatient, maybe I care about those things too much, but hey, it’s a simple “a few cables” system. I was surprised but let them do the thing… (amateurs??)
Eventually, after changing the way they intended to connect their stuff, they managed to play some tunes. I’m not gonna talk about the selection, that’s not important…
What I think about is this “pokketmixer”. I’m dj myself and for me mixing is all about find the right tunes + beat-match them. Yes, for me the mix is about keeping the tempo right, when people dance, you keep them in the mood. Am I old-fashion? Maybe, but those little things made djs good or just presenters… But I’m also about new stuff, I like to embrace technology, I like to try new things, see what is going on in the world.
Now, I can see little party, I can see 2 people having their own selections, maybe even playing back to back tunes using the “pokketmixer”. Easy, small, useful, fun… I guess it’s good if you can use it, but not forget what the real mixing is about….But are we all trying to be djs, are we expanding the dj’s world with some amateurs, who wants only fame, or is it a way to discover real talents? Will we discover it if they are using a toy? (yes, even if it is a music equipment as such, for me it’s a toy)
I guess I need to go to a house party when this thing will be on, to really see if I like it or not. Meanwhile I’m giving it an open opinion.
What do you think, have you got any experience with it, hate it or love it…
